By the way, what does ‘full canvas’ mean? Glad you asked.
In the old days, a suit jacket’s foundation was made of horsehair canvas sewn between the lining and cloth shell. The canvas would allow the suit fabric to drape properly and take the body’s shape, thereby creating an excellent fit.
Today’s canvassed jackets use a blend of horsehair and wool (or sometimes camel) to create a middle structural layer that spans the front panels and lapels of a jacket, which is then loosely handstitched to the fabric. The result is a garment that moves with you, breathes well, drapes more naturally and conforms to the body.
Cheaper suits use a glued – or ‘fused’ – method, which has a more stiff and lifeless look. The fabric also tends to ‘bubble’ and deteriorate with repeated drycleanings.
